To say that chairman Mao Tse Tung changed warfare would be an understatement. Through militant guerrilla struggle, the People's Liberation Army under under Mao's leadership developed a new approach to warfare that would be adopted amongst many national liberation struggles across east Asia and elsewhere. This strategy involved key alliances with the rural peasant masses and indigenous communities, in which the enemy would be drawn out into the countryside and attacked on all sides from guerrilla forces and local militiamen alike. This method of struggle is largely credited to have been vital in the defeat of western imperialism in Vietnam and in the struggle for liberation in Korea in addition to the fierce resistance put up against Japanese invaders by Chinese communist and nationalists alike. While not universal in application, no strategy quite compares to its effectiveness on the battlefield in regions featuring masses of people tethered to the land itself. This technique of armed struggle is commonly known as the Protracted People's War.
